Setelah bergabung dengan teater
nasional Irlandia, dibawah arahan Direktur Artistik Sir Laurence
Olivier, Gambon terus membawakan peran-peran utama dalam drama yang
dibuat oleh Alan Ayckbourn. Karirnya naik ke puncak pada tahun 1980
setelah ia memerankan peran utama di film “Galileo” hasil produksi John
Dexter. Sejak saat itu, Gambon telah tampil secara reguler di Royal
National Theatre dan di RSC. Peran-perannya di dunia teater antara lain:
King Lear, Othello, Mark Anthony dan Volpone. Ia digambarkan oleh
almarhum Sir Ralph Richardson sebagai “Gambon si Hebat” dan kini ia
dihormati sebagai salah satu tokoh teater dan perfilman Inggris yang
paling bersinar. Ia diangkat menjadi Ksatria Kerajaan Inggris dan
mendapatkan gelar Sir pada tahun 1998.
